CozyCar is malware that was used by APT29 from 2010 to 2015. It is a modular malware platform, and its backdoor component can be instructed to download and execute a variety of modules with different functionality. [1]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference S0046
Password stealer and NTLM stealer modules in CozyCar harvest stored credentials from the victim, including credentials used as part of Windows NTLM user authentication.3
The payload of CozyCar is encrypted with simple XOR with a rotating key. The CozyCar configuration file has been encrypted with RC4 keys.4
The CozyCar dropper has masqueraded a copy of the infected system's rundll32.exe executable that was moved to the malware's install directory and renamed according to a predefined configuration file.5
One persistence mechanism used by CozyCar is to register itself as a scheduled task.6
A module in CozyCar allows arbitrary commands to be executed by invoking C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe.7
Standing S0046
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this tool touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 825 ATT&CK software entries only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
61st percentile · 61% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many Enterprise techniques or fewer.
68th percentile · 68% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many tactics spanned or fewer.
61% of the population shares a single value across only 22 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
85% of the population shares a single value across only 8 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
92nd percentile · 92% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many detection rules per technique or fewer.
Detection coverage S0046
589 distinct rules cover the 14 techniques recorded for this tool. The 617 technique-to-rule mappings resolve to 589 distinct rules, because one rule can cover several techniques. 434 Sigma · 155 Splunk.
