Sibot is dual-purpose malware written in VBScript designed to achieve persistence on a compromised system as well as download and execute additional payloads. Microsoft discovered three Sibot variants in early 2021 during its investigation of APT29 and the SolarWinds Compromise.[1]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference S0589
Sibot checked if the compromised system is configured to use proxies.3
Sibot has installed a second-stage script in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\sibot registry key.5
Sibot has downloaded a DLL to the C:\windows\system32\drivers\ folder and renamed it with a .sys extension.6
Sibot has used WMI to discover network connections and configurations. Sibot has also used the Win32_Process class to execute a malicious DLL.7
Standing S0589
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this tool touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 825 ATT&CK software entries only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
75th percentile · 75% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many Enterprise techniques or fewer.
68th percentile · 68% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many tactics spanned or fewer.
61% of the population shares a single value across only 22 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
85% of the population shares a single value across only 8 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
69th percentile · 69% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many detection rules per technique or fewer.
Detection coverage S0589
793 distinct rules cover the 18 techniques recorded for this tool. The 837 technique-to-rule mappings resolve to 793 distinct rules, because one rule can cover several techniques. 513 Sigma · 280 Splunk.
