Proxysvc is a malicious DLL used by Lazarus Group in a campaign known as Operation GhostSecret. It has appeared to be operating undetected since 2017 and was mostly observed in higher education organizations. The goal of Proxysvc is to deliver additional payloads to the target and to maintain control for the attacker. It is in the form of a DLL that can also be executed as a standalone process. [1]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference S0238
Proxysvc gathers product names from the Registry key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion ProductName and the processor description from the Registry key HKLM\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0 ProcessorNameString.3
Proxysvc collects the network adapter information and domain/username information based on current remote sessions.4
Proxysvc performs data exfiltration over the control server channel using a custom protocol.5
Proxysvc executes a binary on the system and logs the results into a temp file by using: <code>cmd.exe /c "<file_path> > %temp%\PM* .tmp 2>&1"</code>.7
Standing S0238
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this tool touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 825 ATT&CK software entries only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
66th percentile · 66% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many Enterprise techniques or fewer.
68th percentile · 68% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many tactics spanned or fewer.
61% of the population shares a single value across only 22 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
85% of the population shares a single value across only 8 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
68th percentile · 68% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many detection rules per technique or fewer.
Detection coverage S0238
429 distinct rules cover the 15 techniques recorded for this tool. The 458 technique-to-rule mappings resolve to 429 distinct rules, because one rule can cover several techniques. 281 Sigma · 148 Splunk.
