UNC3886 is a China-nexus cyberespionage group that has been active since at least 2022, targeting defense, technology, and telecommunication organizations located in the United States and the Asia-Pacific-Japan (APJ) regions. UNC3886 has displayed a deep understanding of edge devices and virtualization technologies through the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities and the use of novel malware families and utilities.[1][2]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference G1048
UNC3886 has employed layers of redundancy to maintain access to compromised environments including network devices, hypervisors, and virtual machines.4
UNC3886 has used the publicly available rootkits REPTILE and MEDUSA on targeted VMs.5
During RedPenguin, UNC3886 used rootkits such as REPTILE and MEDUSA.6
During RedPenguin, UNC3886 leveraged JunoOS CLI queries to obtain the interface index which contains system and network details.78
UNC3886 has established remote SSH access to targeted ESXi hosts.910
UNC3886 has replaced atomic indicators mentioned in threat intelligence publications, sometimes as quickly as under a week after release.11
Standing G1048
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this group touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 176 ATT&CK groups only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
84th percentile · 84% of 176 ATT&CK groups have this many Enterprise techniques or fewer.
85th percentile · 85% of 176 ATT&CK groups have this many tactics spanned or fewer.
76th percentile · 76% of 176 ATT&CK groups have this many tools and malware or fewer.
89% of the population shares a single value across only 4 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
17th percentile · 83% of 176 ATT&CK groups have more detection rules per technique.
Detection coverage G1048
1503 distinct rules cover the 49 techniques recorded for this group. The 1623 technique-to-rule mappings resolve to 1503 distinct rules, because one rule can cover several techniques. 983 Sigma · 520 Splunk.
