DEADEYE is a malware launcher that has been used by APT41 since at least May 2021. DEADEYE has variants that can either embed a payload inside a compiled binary (DEADEYE.EMBED) or append it to the end of a file (DEADEYE.APPEND).[1]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference S1052
The DEADEYE.EMBED variant of DEADEYE has the ability to embed payloads inside of a compiled binary.3
DEADEYE has used schtasks /change to modify scheduled tasks including \Microsoft\Windows\PLA\Server Manager Performance Monitor, \Microsoft\Windows\Ras\ManagerMobility, \Microsoft\Windows\WDI\SrvSetupResults, and \Microsoft\Windows\WDI\USOShared.5
DEADEYE can run cmd /c copy /y /b C:\Users\public\syslog_6-*.dat C:\Users\public\syslog.dll to combine separated sections of code into a single DLL prior to execution.6
DEADEYE can enumerate a victim computer's volume serial number and host name.7
Standing S1052
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this tool touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 825 ATT&CK software entries only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
54th percentile · 54% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many Enterprise techniques or fewer.
21st percentile · 79% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more tactics spanned.
61% of the population shares a single value across only 22 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
85% of the population shares a single value across only 8 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
43rd percentile · 57% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more detection rules per technique.
Detection coverage S1052
277 distinct rules cover the 12 techniques recorded for this tool. The 291 technique-to-rule mappings resolve to 277 distinct rules, because one rule can cover several techniques. 199 Sigma · 78 Splunk.
