J-magic is a custom variant of the cd00r backdoor tailored to target Juniper routers that was first observed during the J-magic Campaign in mid-2023. J-magic monitors TCP traffic for five predefined parameters or "magic packets" to be sent by the attackers before activating on compromised devices.[1]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference S1203
J-magic can rename itself as “[nfsiod 0]” to masquerade as the local Network File System (NFS) asynchronous I/O server.3
J-magic has a pcap listener function that can create an Extended Berkley Packet Filter (eBPF) on designated interfaces and ports.4
The J-magic agent is executed through a command line argument which specifies an interface and listening port.5
J-magic can overwrite previously executed command line arguments.6
J-magic can monitor incoming C2 communications sent over TCP to the compromised host.7
Standing S1203
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this tool touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 825 ATT&CK software entries only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
38th percentile · 62% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more Enterprise techniques.
53rd percentile · 53% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many tactics spanned or fewer.
61% of the population shares a single value across only 22 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
85% of the population shares a single value across only 8 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
19th percentile · 81% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more detection rules per technique.
Detection coverage S1203
115 distinct rules cover the 8 techniques recorded for this tool. 75 Sigma · 40 Splunk.
