NGLite is a backdoor Trojan that is only capable of running commands received through its C2 channel. While the capabilities are standard for a backdoor, NGLite uses a novel C2 channel that leverages a decentralized network based on the legitimate NKN to communicate between the backdoor and the actors.[1]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference S1106
NGLite will run the whoami command to gather system information and return this to the command and control server.3
NGLite will initially beacon out to the NKN network via an HTTP POST over TCP 30003.4
NGLite has abused NKN infrastructure for its C2 communication.5
NGLite will use an AES encrypted channel for command and control purposes, in one case using the key WHATswrongwithUu.6
Standing S1106
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this tool touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 825 ATT&CK software entries only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
23rd percentile · 77% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more Enterprise techniques.
12th percentile · 88% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more tactics spanned.
61% of the population shares a single value across only 22 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
85% of the population shares a single value across only 8 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
60th percentile · 60% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have this many detection rules per technique or fewer.
Detection coverage S1106
131 distinct rules cover the 5 techniques recorded for this tool. The 135 technique-to-rule mappings resolve to 131 distinct rules, because one rule can cover several techniques. 88 Sigma · 43 Splunk.
