Has edited the Microsoft.IdentityServer.Servicehost.exe.config file to load a malicious DLL into the AD FS process, thereby enabling persistent access to any service federated with AD FS for a user with a specified User Principal Name.1

Adversaries may patch, modify, or otherwise backdoor cloud authentication processes that are tied to on-premises user identities in order to bypass typical authentication mechanisms, access credentials, and enable persistent access to accounts.
Hybrid Identity MITRE reference T1556.007
1 group has been recorded using this technique. Newest first; each entry carries MITRE’s procedure text and a link to the group’s full record. Click a name to filter the rules below.
All 1 groups for this technique
1 software entry is documented implementing this technique. MITRE files each as a tool or as malware; newest first, then by how many groups carry them.
Can inject a malicious DLL (PTASpy) into the AzureADConnectAuthenticationAgentService to backdoor Azure AD Pass-Through Authentication.1

Offense vs defense T1556.007
Is defensive coverage keeping up with adversary use? Eight counts, each ranked against all 697 ATT&CK techniques. Attack sits left, defense right, so a shape leaning left means adversaries are better documented here than defenders are equipped. Hover any spoke for its percentile and the share of techniques that have more. The timeline below shows when each side arrived.
Hybrid Identity detection strategy DET0293
MITRE names one behaviour worth catching for this technique and breaks it into 5 analytics, one per platform. Each carries the log sources it needs and the fields you tune per environment.
Detect Hybrid Identity Authentication Process Modification
AN0814 · Windows
Detects injection or tampering of DLLs in hybrid identity agents (e.g., AzureADConnectAuthenticationAgentService), registry or configuration changes tied to PTA/AD FS, and anomalous LSASS or AD FS module loads correlated with authentication anomalies.
Log sources
The data this analytic draws on. You do not need every component — each one you already collect covers part of it. Each links to its ATT&CK record.
| Data component | Name | Channel |
|---|---|---|
| Module LoadDC0016 | WinEventLog:Sysmon | EventCode=7 |
| Active Directory Object ModificationDC0066 | WinEventLog:Security | EventCode=5136 |
| Logon Session CreationDC0067 | WinEventLog:Security | Anomalous logon without MFA enforcement |
Tunable fields
MITRE calls these the analytic’s mutable elements: the thresholds and filters you set for your own environment.
| Field | What you tune |
|---|---|
| WatchedServices | Hybrid identity services monitored for tampering, e.g., PTA agent, AD FS. |
| TimeWindow | Window correlating DLL/module load events with logon anomalies. |
AN0815 · Identity Provider
Detects registration of new PTA agents, conditional access changes disabling hybrid MFA enforcement, or suspicious updates to AD FS token-signing configurations.
Log sources
The data this analytic draws on. You do not need every component — each one you already collect covers part of it. Each links to its ATT&CK record.
| Data component | Name | Channel |
|---|---|---|
| User Account ModificationDC0010 | m365:unified | New agent registration by non-admin user |
| Application Log ContentDC0038 | azure:signinlogs | Register PTA Agent or Modify AD FS trust |
Tunable fields
MITRE calls these the analytic’s mutable elements: the thresholds and filters you set for your own environment.
| Field | What you tune |
|---|---|
| PrivilegedRoles | Roles authorized to configure PTA/AD FS integrations. |
AN0816 · IaaS
Detects API calls registering or updating hybrid identity connectors, modification of cloud-to-on-premises federation trust, and unusual token issuance logs.
Log sources
The data this analytic draws on. You do not need every component — each one you already collect covers part of it. Each links to its ATT&CK record.

| Field | What you tune |
|---|---|
| MonitoredFederations | Federation trusts and connectors relevant to hybrid identity setup. |
AN0817 · Office Suite
Detects tenant-wide authentication or conditional access changes that weaken hybrid identity enforcement, including disabling AD FS or bypassing hybrid MFA policies.
Log sources
The data this analytic draws on. You do not need every component — each one you already collect covers part of it. Each links to its ATT&CK record.

| Field | What you tune |
|---|---|
| PolicyScope | Scope of authentication and federation policies to be monitored. |
AN0818 · SaaS
Detects suspicious changes to SAML/OAuth federation configurations, such as new signing certificates, altered endpoints, or claims issuance rules granting elevated privileges.

Periodically review the hybrid identity solution in use for any discrepancies. For example, review all PTA agents in the Entra ID Management Portal to identify any unwanted or unapproved ones. If ADFS is in use, review DLLs and executable files in the AD FS and Global Assembly Cache directories to ensure that they are signed by Microsoft. Note that in some cases binaries may be catalog-signed, which may cause the file to appear unsigned when viewing file properties.
Integrating multi-factor authentication (MFA) as part of organizational policy can greatly reduce the risk of an adversary gaining control of valid credentials that may be used for additional tactics such as initial access, lateral movement, and collecting information. MFA can also be used to restrict access to cloud resources and APIs.
Limit on-premises accounts with access to the hybrid identity solution in place. For example, limit Entra ID Global Administrator accounts to only those required, and ensure that these are dedicated cloud-only accounts rather than hybrid ones.
