ANELLDR, a loader that has been in use since at least 2018, was designed to decrypt and execute UPPERCUT in memory. ANELLDR can use anti-analysis techniques and is known to share code overlap with HiddenFace.[1][2]
Enterprise ATT&CK only. Any Mobile or ICS rows on the same ATT&CK page are not carried.
MITRE reference S9027
ANELLDR can update its encryption key to AES-256-CBC and re-encrypt its payload, overwriting the original payload file with the newly encrypted data.4
ANELLDR can enumerate files in the current directory to search for encrypted payload files.6
ANELLDR can use the ZwSetInformationThread to enable debugger evasion.7
ANELLDR can decrypt encrypted payload data using AES-256-CBC and subsequently execute the payload in memory.8
Standing S9027
Reach is how much of ATT&CK this tool touches. Coverage is how well defended each thing it does is, as a median per technique rather than a total — a total would just restate the reach. Each figure is ranked against all 825 ATT&CK software entries only where that population actually spreads. Where most of the population shares one value, a percentile would rank the tie instead of the entity, so the raw value is shown and no rank is claimed.
Reach
38th percentile · 62% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more Enterprise techniques.
21st percentile · 79% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more tactics spanned.
61% of the population shares a single value across only 22 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
85% of the population shares a single value across only 8 distinct values, so a percentile here would rank the tie, not the entity.
Coverage
40th percentile · 60% of 825 ATT&CK software entries have more detection rules per technique.
Detection coverage S9027
288 distinct rules cover the 8 techniques recorded for this tool. The 291 technique-to-rule mappings resolve to 288 distinct rules, because one rule can cover several techniques. 253 Sigma · 35 Splunk.
